Help for Turtle Hatchlings

The situation for wildlife is more urgent every day. The world is facing the irreversible loss of one species of turtle after the death of the last living female in April. Now only three Yangtze giant softshell turtles are known to exist, and they are all male.

Our friends at SEE Turtles are working hard to help sea turtles survive, and we are committed to helping them. They’ve recently stepped up their amazing efforts to help sea turtle hatchings survive. Without help, only one in a thousand baby sea turtles will survive to adulthood, while 999 are lost to pollution, predators and general habitat destruction.

That’s why we are so excited that SEE Turtles is escalating their efforts to save hatchlings. Last year, they were able to save five baby turtles for each dollar donated. This year, faced with growing threats to the marine environment, they are doubling their efforts and have pledged to save ten hatchings for every dollar donated. We are proud to donate one dollar to SEE Turtles for every purchase, so now you can help save ten baby turtles every time you shop with Ocean Jewelry.

Why We Support SEE Turtles

Many groups are working hard to save ocean habitats and the precious creatures who call the sea home. It was not easy to pick one to support! But SEE Turtles impressed the most. An impressive 94% of their funds go directly to conservation programs. And their efforts are making a real difference.

In 2018, SEE Turtles made amazing progress. The group protected 14 important nesting beaches in eight different countries, which allowed them to save almost 500,000 hatchlings. More than 300,000 of these were green turtles at Colola Beach in Mexico, which is managed by the Nahua People and the University of Michoacan. Other victories include saving 61,000 baby turtles in Grenada (leatherbacks), 30,000 in Cuba (greens and loggerheads) and 15,400 in Nicaragua (Olive Ridleys, hawkbills and greens). They also expanded their work to include four more local conservation groups.

Turtles have been around since the time of the dinosaurs. To lose them now would be an unspeakable tragedy. Their loss, like every species extinction,  would have a devastating knock-on effect on the planet’s ecosystem.

We’re committed to doing our part to help by donating one dollar to SEE Turtles for every purchase of Ocean Jewelry. But that’s not all we can do. We’d encourage all of our readers to commit to picking up litter when they visit a beach, river or lake. We’d ask you to shop for seafood has been caught in an environmentally friendly, responsible way. If we all do our part to protect the earth by making the lifestyle and consumer changes that we can, it isn’t yet too late to save the sea turtles and the other amazing ocean creatures.
